Introduction

Product on Review: Hauppauge HD PVR Gaming Edition
Manufacturer: Haupauge
Street Price: £149 inc. VAT

Making Frag movies has been a popular past time for PC enthusiasts since the dawn of online gaming. Popular tools such as FRAPS enable the creator to record movies and using video editing software these movies can then be uploaded to your favourite video hosting site. For console users however, ripping video is not quite as easy as a console does not have this capability via software and thus Hauppauge have created a video recorder peripheral able record H.264 compressed movies in real-time from your XBOX360 or PS3 with resolutions up to 1080i.

This isn't the first time we have seen the Hauppauge PVR however as the original PVR, while acceptable was not capable of HD recording nor was it specifically aimed at console gamers. The aptly named 'Gaming Edition' is designed from the ground up for XBOX360 and PS3 owners and is aimed to be easy to use, easy to setup and also comes as a complete unit with the bundled Arcsoft Showbiz software to edit your movie. One of the new features of the Gaming Edition is that it has pass through technology so there should no longer be any delay from playing to recording the game if you are watching the progress on both your TV screen and a PC monitor.

As this is our first time using the Hauppauge PVR, we will give you a complete rundown of how easy/difficult the unit really is to setup and get running and all things being well, a short movie will be uploaded by the end of this review. So without further delay let’s take a look at the specifications and features of today’s review product.
