ROCCAT Kone+ Review

Performance and Conclusion

**Update** After 6 months of usage you can see that the emblem is looking rather shabby. It has started to wear thin, bubble and seperate as pictured below. With the Kone+ being a high-end gaming mouse and costing considerably more than other mice on the market this is disappointing.

Commenting on the performance of a gaming peripheral can be a difficult task because we all have different shaped and sized hands, we all have opinions on what feels good and what doesn't. So the thoughts within this section are based purely upon first hand experience. Commenting on the durability, feel and software manipulation.

I used the Kone[+] for a sustained period of time in a variety of different environments. I spent over 3 hours gaming with the mouse combined with the ROCCAT Sota pad - ensuring the tracking control calibration had performed its scan and optimised settings for the surface. It handled games excellently, immediately I felt comfortable using the Kone[+] its shape and size are just right. I did notice something though, at default the lift-off or " ;Distance Control" interfered when gaming. When I moved my mouse by lifting the Kone[+] off the pad to look whilst in game - at around 6-7mm the movement was registered. So I changed this to "Extra Low" as I explained in the previous section of the software. This removed the problem and the sensor on the Kone[+] stopped registering movement right away.

I also tested the Kone[+] within windows and image editing software. In fact I used the mouse to edit the images for this review as a thorough all-round test. Again it handled intricate, precise movements just perfectly and was a pleasure to work with.

Conclusion

I enjoy reviewing mice, whilst some review sites may not take part in reviewing such peripherals I think the market shows that this type of product is at a period of time when things are very competitive. There are a lot of newcomers, but also some stalwarts.

With the arrival of the Kone[+], ROCCAT have reinvented the wheel so to speak. They have gone away and carefully thought about how they can improve a very successful product, and I can confirm that they most definitely have devised a thoroughly innovative product in the Kone[+].

If 6000DPI isn't enough to please your gaming habits then the 24 button options just might. The software bundled with the Kone[+] compliments the mouse beautifully because it works hand in hand to deliver some outstanding functionality. You can alter the colours on the mouse to your desire, creating smooth, vibrant gradients. You can calibrate the mouse to whatever gaming pad you use, ensuring the best possible traction is available, you can configure 12 commands available as standard to convert to 24 commands via the EasyShift[+] and much more. It oozes innovation this mouse.

At around £70 ($109 / €82) the Kone[+] may appear to be rather an expensive bit of kit but compare this against the likes of the Razer Mamba, Logitech G700 or the Saitek Cyborg all of which are in the same league and you will be aware that the Kone[+] is the cheapest of the bunch and I would dare to say it offers much more. You pay for what you get, this is a cutting edge product.

Pros
+ Unique looks
+ Extremely innovative
+ Extensive customisation
+ Up to 6000DPI

Cons
- Weight cover can be tricky to remove
- Logo wears out after just 6 months

You would be able to tell that from this review I am very inspired by what ROCCAT have brought to the table. The Kone[+] thoroughly deserves the Gold award.
