Good Review Fella !
About time we had some sound card reviews, and lets hope it isn't too long before we see more - I would like to see a really top-end audiophile sound card reviewed please.....!
Seems to me that the pc is becoming used more as the home entertainment system, and so many people are getting used to listening to poorly compressed mp3's with no idea what they are missing out on by higher quality files (flac, WAV or whatever) and high quality sound systems.
Get onto ASUS Sahil and tell 'em we need more sound card reviews soon !

Thanks Steve. It was quite hard to write the review because I really don't know much about the technical side of music but I sure learnt a fair amount during this.

I agree, the PC is more an entertainment system now and there's no reason why people shouldn't get sound cards. They improve music quality tremendously and I really like the Xonar D2 I'm using. Maybe if we could get the higher end Xonar ST etc, it would be better but I really hope my AEGO M 2.1 do them justice. Audiophiles seem to look down on computer speakers.

Nice review!

I agree with you - i'd love to see something like the ST reviewed.

I actually choose to take the sound from the PC via a digital output. This goes to an external dac/headphone amp and then onto a set of headphones. I've found this produces an improved presentation with a much quiter sound floor (sound cards can be effeted by electronic noise within the PC chassis) - something like the Xonar ST with its shielded enclosure will surely improve this so i'd be intrigued to see how it performs!

Also, don't worry about your AEGO's. They are truly excellent speakers for the money. They will certainly better any comparably priced PC speaker they're put up against.

Once again - very nice review Sahil!

gt_junkie - yup, I too do the same - I have a digital coax out into a Beresford Caiman DAC and am waiting for my Squeezebox Touch to arrive, which will replace the pc for music, I hope !
However, it would be good to know what a top class soundcard could do compared to these...

Thanks man!

I currently use a Xonar D2 and that sounds better than the DS. Music seems clearer and more refined and it makes use of the EMI shield like the higher end stx etc. It still has the same problem in EAX games though such as BF2. What I'd really like to see is the Auzentech solutions. They use the X-Fi chips but with much better components and OPamps, hence giving you the best of both world in essence.
