AMD 7990 to Land in April

News Editor: Tony Le Bourne Date: 20-03-2012 [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]  Discuss in Forums

AMD plan on releasing the dual core HD 7990 graphics card shortly after the release of NVIDIAs GTX 680 to settle the performance crown dispute.

Reports are claiming that the AMD Radeon HD 7990 will be coming in April not too long after NVIDIA release the GTX 680 with hopes of taking the performance crown. The dual 28nm 'Tahiti' graphics card will sport some impressive specifications, 4096 GCN cores, 256 TMUs, 64 ROPs, and 2 x 384-bit memory bus and 6GB GDDR5 memory (3GB per GPU) on a single PCB, some may quake at the thought of the price.

Current expectations suggest that the HD 7990 will ship with an 850MHz core and 1250MHz memory speed which is cut down from the reference speeds we see for the HD 7970. This is likely to meet thermal and power limitations as we have seen such reductions in the past with the HD 6990 and the cut down HD 5970. The previous performance champion bout ended, arguably, in a tie between the HD 6990 and GTX 590, it will soon be time for the new contenders to stand up and deliver their blow.
