AMD Radeon HD 7990 Debuts as a Very Limited Edition in July?

News Editor: Craig Farren Date: 10-07-2012 [ Print | 4 comment(s) ]  Discuss in Forums

AMD is gearing up to launch the dual-GPU card, illusive Radeon HD 7990 in the second half of July.

Codenamed 'New Zealand', the 7990 is AMD's highest end and most powerful card to come from the Southern Islands architecture, the last of the Southern Island range before Sea Island hits.

Consisting of two Tahiti XT GPUs and 6GB GDDR5 memory (special edition 7990s could reach 12GB), Radeon HD 7990 goes head to head against the GeForce GTX 690.

By default, AMD has the advantage in terms of 50% more video memory (GTX 690 has 4GB), significantly higher memory bandwidth and the new Turbo mode, technology similar to the Turbo mode used on NVIDIA Kepler-based cards with a few major differences.

Wait! Did I read that correctly? Possible 12GB of RAM on a GPU?

Boards are already starting to be sampled in preparation for the launch in the second half of July. There is no word on pricing yet as this will likely come closer to release.

Do you think 12GB of RAM is overkill or crazy or is it fantastic? Discuss in our forums.

12gb? Surely that is overkill for anyone at the moment? Perhaps multi screen 3d gaming might push it, but then i don't think the power is there to run that. Still, sounds good though

Thats 'only' (lol) 6gb per GPU so just counts as 6gb not 12.

Just go on Hardforum to the mutli displays area and look at many many threads of people with 3 1080p and 1440/1600p screens, 3gb per GPU is not enough for modern games if you want them to look as good as possible with the power youv'e got.

Its not a matter of performance, 7970's cant play BF3 mp on 3 1600p screens at high settings atall, mostly low, and more Vram wont change that. BUT its a matter of textures which dont take much of a performance hit they just need enough Vram, and high res textures on a game liek BF3 for example with everything else on low make it look very good indeed, compared to low/medium which looks completely poop and is what you would have to run with only 2/3gb of VRAM.

Plus it is very good that AMD do this, for example, Nvidia could quite easily given the 670/680 2.5/3gb of Vram at little cost difference, but they didnt because with only 2gb, in a few years time or even less the 670/680 will be RAM limited in allot of the new games like the 570 is starting to now, this means you will have to buy the new latest Nvidia card for some more money, instead of for example buying a second hand card and going SLI to get the same performance.

Nvidia arent stupid, AMD just give us more Vram because they arent so tight (and cant afford to be so tight, where as with this market Nvidia can as they know people wont even notice it or ignore it and they will get away with it)

PCplod is right. This card will be great for gamers with highers resolutions or multi monitor setups etc. AMD have really pushed eyefinity AMD cards with more RAM make sense. I think most AMD cards have more RAM than their green foes.
