GIGABYTE Show Off New Mini-ITX Motherboards

News Editor: Tim Harmer Date: 22-08-2012 [ Print | 1 comment(s) ]  Discuss in Forums

New photos are the début of the Z77N-WiFi and H77N-WiFi, for small yet fully-featured systems.

'GIGABYTE are making 7-series Mini-ITX motherboards' will be music to the ears of any fan of diminutive PCs with ample power. Though they've been teased for a little while, the wraps have finally been taken off the GA-Z77N-WiFi and GA-H77N-WiFi, and they look like pretty tasty propositions.

Outwardly the motherboard images look almost identical - apart from the SKU label it would be almost impossible to tell the difference; it may be that the designs will diverge in later revisions. Whilst the Z77 option with be clearly defined by allowing overclocking, both H77 and Z77 will feature:

* Dual HDMI
* DVI/I
* Intel Centrino WiFi + Bluetooth module with Intel wireless LAN functionality
* Dual LAN
* Dual USB 3.0, 4 x USB 2
* PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot
* Dual DDR3 DIMM slots
* Onboard (7.1) Surround Audio /w Optical SPDIF

As small form factor gaming systems continue to grown in popularity, these boards should become commonplace. It will be fascinating to see how well the Z77N-WiFi deals with overclocking, a potential hiccup in the past due the space restrictions which limit how elaborate the power delivery system can be. Additionally, CPU cooler compatibility will be key.

There's no word yet on the release date of the new 'boards, but we expect it to be relatively soon. You can find more images on the GIGABYTE Motherboard Tech Column Facebook page

I'm becoming more and more interested in the SFF segment and these boards seem to have some nice features, the WIFI being a very useful one, but to me the socket placement seems to be pretty limiting. Surely it would have made more sense to swap that with the PCH to give a bit more breathing room for aftermarket coolers?
