Ahead of its anticipated December 1st release Avalanche Studios have revealed both minimum and recommended specifications for Just Cause 3, the open-world sandbox FPS franchise sequel. Given the rate at which Triple-A games have been ramping up system requirements it's perhaps unsurprising to see that JC3's are pretty hefty:

Minimum Specifications

OS: Vista SP2, Win 7 SP1, Win 8.1 (64-bit Operating System Required)
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K, 3.3 Ghz | AMD Phenom II X6 1075T 3 Ghz
Memory: 6GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 (2GB) | AMD Radeon HD 7870 (2GB)

Recommended Specifications

OS: Vista SP2, Win 7 SP1, Win 8.1 (64-bit Operating System Required)
CPU: Intel Core i7-3770, 3.4 GHz | AMD FX-8350, 4.0 GHz
Memory: 8 GB Ram
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (3GB) | AMD R9 290 (4GB)

On paper the minimum spec of a Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Phenom II x6 1075T puts Just Cause 3 well out of the reach of many fans equipped with even fairly modern mainstream systems. Both are muscular true quad-core CPUs, and the 2500K in particular comfortably out-paces some more recent releases from Intel and AMD. Users of AMD APUs in particular could have trouble if this minimum is at all accurate.

Unsurprisingly, the minimum graphics requirements are also relatively stringent. One might expect an NVIDIA GTX 650 Ti or AMD 7770 to be an realistic baseline, but GTX 670/ HD7870 were both mid-to-high performance cards just three years ago. System Memory and VRAM requirements by contrast are fairly modest at 6GB/2GB respectively.

One other point which could be a problem is the requirement of a 64-bit OS, but if you're running more than 4GB RAM you'll almost certainly be using one anyway.

Avalanche's Recommended Specifications for Just Cause 3 are much more reasonable. Both NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 and AMD Radeon R9 290 are now around a generation old, but were near the top of the tree for said generation; no need for an AMD Fury or NVIDIA Titan here thank goodness. An Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD FX-8350 are similarly well matched, although it will be interesting to see if JC3 can take full advantage of either CPU's multi-threading capabilities.

It's pleasing to note that no specific vendor appears to be favoured with the recommended specifications, something of a rarity in recent years.

Just Cause 3 is scheduled for release on December 1st 2015 for PC, XBOX One and PS4 priced from £35.99.
