NVIDIA & Samsung Patent Dispute Comes To An End

The protracted legal battle between NVIDIA and Samsung over patent infringement has come to an end this week, with both parties agreeing to a limited licensing agreement over some of the disputed technologies. A limited press release stated that:

The agreement will lead to the immediate dismissal of all pending IP litigation in U.S. district courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. Patent Office between the companies.

The settlement includes the licensing of a small number of patents by each company to the other, but no broad cross-licensing of patents or other compensation. Further details of the agreement are not being disclosed.

In December NVIDIA was dealt a major blow in their the US ITC Patent case against Samsung and Qualcomm, after the International Trade Commission upheld a judge's ruling which cleared Samsung and Qualcomm of violating NVIDIA's patents. However this was just one part of a multi-front dispute encompassing both Samsung and NVIDIA's patents, a conflict which now appears to have cooled.

Given the current state of the US patent system, and the stance of aggressive litigation employed by most technology industry titans, this is unlikely to be the last time either will spend in a court room. At least next time they probably won't be on opposite sides.
