Samsung have announced some pretty amazing technology. EYECAN+ is the companies second-generation eye mouse that allows people with disabilities to compose and edit documents as well as browse the web, all through simple eye movement.

What is more incredible is that fact that no peripherals, such as glasses are required making this technology the first of its kind. It is a single unit that is portable and sits below the monitor. It works wirelessly to calibrate with the user's eye.

For it to work the user must be situated between 60cm and 70cm from the monitor, and does not require the user to be in any specific position. EYECAN+ will remember each users eye characteristics which means that calibration only needs to be done for first time users. Users are also able to adjust the calibration and sensitivity on the fly.

Once it has been calibrated the UI will appear as a pop-up menu in one of two different ways; a rectangular menu board or a floating menu wheel. Which one the user decides to use is completely up to them as they both contain 18 different commands and can be configured to remain in the foreground.

The use of all 18 commands requires only eye movement and blinking with each command being selectable by looking directly at the icon and blinking once.

This really is amazing technology and what is more amazing is that Samsung plan to make this open source. Samsung plan to only make a limited quantity of the units before donating them to charity organisations. Doesn't it just make you feel all warm and fuzzy?
