Sid Meier's Civilization®: Beyond Earth™ is a new science-fiction-themed entry into the award-winning Civilization series. As part of an expedition sent to find a home beyond Earth, lead your people into a new frontier, explore and colonize an alien planet and create a new civilization in space. A New Beginning for Mankind is coming Fall/Autumn 2014.
Civilization: Beyond Earth was unveiled by 2K Games and Firaxis at PAX East over the weekend, and it was literally seconds before eager attendees were contemplating a sequel to one of the most well regarded strategy titles of all time: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Although not a direct sequel - the publishing rights to AC titles are believed to still reside with EA - many are hoping that it will be something of a spiritual successor to the planetary colonisation game. Due for release in Autumn 2014, the first trailer can be seen below:
2K Games have already taken a cautious step towards the future by announcing that the new game will support Mantle, AMD's proprietary rendering API with runs alongside DirectX 11. Probably not of much value to those running high-end gaming systems, it should nonetheless aid more casual gamers looking to play the game with higher image quality settings on AMD Kaveri APU-based systems. Additionally Firaxis are developing the title for OSX and Linux (via the Steam OS), giving you plenty of desktop platforms to try it on.
