Steam 'Big Picture' beta coming soon

News Editor: Craig Farren Date: 17-08-2012 [ Print | 4 comment(s) ]  Discuss in Forums

They’ve got the big screen, now give them the big picture.

Steams Big Picture mode was first announced in early 2011 and since then has been a much sought after addition to the popular gaming platform. What is Big Picture mode? Well it is a new way of viewing your games library that involves a big TV, controller support and big pictures.

It’s time to come out of the den and explore a few more rooms of the house.

Heading to the living room—or anywhere there’s a big screen—is Steam’s soon-to-be-released big-picture mode, offering simple, easy-to-read navigation designed specifically for TV. With full controller support, big-picture mode will let gamers kick back and enjoy their favorite games on the biggest screen in the house.

Essentially this makes it easier to navigate your games library from the comfort of your couch with either a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. The announcement is set to be on tonight's episode of GTTV and should hopefully be on gametrailers later on as well. This is all taken from Geoff Keighley's Twitter account so there is still yet to be confirmation from the big man himself, Gabe Newell.

What do you think of Big Picture Mode?

I'm not really much of a PC gamer. I have Steam and a selection of games on it but I haven't used Steam in many months. If this turns out as well as it could i'll be back using it much more in the future and I guess this is the kind of comment Valve want to read. Real potential.

I agree. This is a pretty awesome feature. Lots of people have a media centre PC or HTPC attached to their TV (myself included) and this would add a new dimension to that. For me the real benefit to this would be the ability to play indie or co-op games on the couch with a few mates. I know that is essentially what a console is for but I don't like consoles and have a good selection of PC games.
