When Is A Mouse, Not A Mouse?

It's that time of year again: you've run out of mince pies, the shops have started rolling out Easter Eggs, and the latest 'innovative' ideas to make it to retail are being showcased on the world stage. Yes, the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show 2012 is just around the corner.

The Show proper begins on the 10th of January, but as is often the case some manufacturers have released details of their products before the official unveiling. One of these is Logitech, PC peripheral manufacturer to the masses, who have pulled the trigger on the Cube - a new hybrid wireless mouse and presenter with mobile applications.

The idea is simple - having to choose between a mouse and a presenter is inconvenient at best, productivity-killing at worst, so why choose? The Cube can dynamically switch between mouse mode (when close to a mousing surface) and presenter mode at other times. Scrolling is via a touch-sensitive surface and firmware which will interpolate input into a smooth motion, and presentation advances can be performed with a simple click.

A USB-chargeable Lithium-Ion battery is integrated into the Cube, which interfaces with your PC via Logitech's Unifying wireless receivers. The device also has a power-off switch to conserve battery power, for the times when it's sat in your top pocket out of the way. Sadly, the non-ergonomic nature of the Cube makes it unsuitable for extended sessions as a mouse.

Available this month, the price is set to be £59.99 / 69.99 Euros and is backed by Logitech's often excellent 3 yr warranty. Gallery images indicate a white option will be released too. For more information on the Logitech Cube check out their blog post on the mouse here.
