ZOTAC Intro The ZBOX ID84-PLUS

News Editor: Tim Harmer Date: 08-08-2012 [ Print | 1 comment(s) ]  Discuss in Forums

Mini-PC pairs NVIDIA Fermi graphics with a Dual-core Intel Atom CPU for low-power HTPC goodness.

ZOTAC continue to bolster their range of mini-PCs with the ZBOX-ID84-Plus, a new small form factor PC based around the low-power Intel Atom platform and NVIDIA GT 520M graphics.

The ID84 utilises a NM10 Express chipset which integrates a dual-core Intel Atom D2550 CPU clocked at 1.86 GHz. In a step-up from the barebones ID84, the 'Plus' variant also includes 2GB of DDR3 SODIMM RAM and 320GB 5400RPM HDD in the 2.5" format; the two SODIMM slots mean the system is expandable to 4GB RAM for those who require it. Other welcome features of the chipset are USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n WiFi and an IR Remote sensor for use as an XBMC-platform or more general use PC.

In terms of graphics power, the GT520M is based on the previous-gen Fermi architecture supporting CUDA and DirectX 11. It's no gaming powerhouse - only 48 CUDA cores and 1.4GHz core frequency in reference configuration mean it probably won't be up to Black Ops - but should be plenty for hardware accelerated HD video decoding. The chipset allows for DVI and HDMI output in resolutions at least as high as 1080p, though it's not clear if DVI and HDMI can be used concurrently.

As well as having system specs suitable for a range of users, ZBOX's may be mounted to the rear of most standard flat panel TVs thanks to their VESA mounting system, making them ideal for those who want the flexibility of a PC without being an eyesore. Not that the ID84 is an ugly box - the silver and glossy-black finish could almost be called 'classic' for consumer electronics.
