Let’s take a closer look at the FG3 itself. Weighing in at 315 grams, the headset is relatively lightweight compared with many gaming headsets I have used, which should help reduce fatigue during longer gaming sessions.
A standout feature of the FiiO FG3 is its adjustable ear cups. As shown in the photo above, the cups swivel to lay completely flat, ensuring a comfortable and personalized fit.
The FiiO FG3 ear cups feature a matte plastic construction with glossy accents. It is a straightforward, minimalist design that aligns perfectly with its budget-friendly price point.
Although the FiiO FG3 is categorized as a closed-back headset, it features small, hidden holes where the ear cups connect to the headband. This is a common design choice among major audio brands known as acoustic venting; these ports help relieve air pressure to prevent the driver from flexing and are often used to enhance the headset's bass response.
With a pad depth of roughly 25mm, the FiiO FG3 ensures the hard interior of the ear cups won't rub against your ears, preventing discomfort over time. The cushions are wrapped in a breathable woven mesh. This trades the tight seal of leatherette for superior heat dissipation, making the headset much more comfortable for extended use.
The FiiO FG3’s headband features a flexible steel and plastic construction that provides a secure, comfortable clamping force. As shown in the photo above, it offers a generous extension range to accommodate different head sizes. The underside is lined with plush cushioning wrapped in Alcantara fabric, giving it a premium and exceptionally soft feel.
The included USB-C to USB-A adapter gives the FiiO FG3 excellent cross-platform compatibility, allowing you to easily switch between a PC, laptop, smartphone, or tablet.
The DAC and amplifier are built directly into the inline USB-C control module. It features an "M" (Mode) button that toggles between three presets: Gaming, Cinema, and Music. The Music mode offers a customizable equalizer, and all three profiles can be tweaked via the FiiO Control Web interface (which we will cover later in this review). Instead of a traditional dial, volume is adjusted using a tactile rocker switch. Finally, a dedicated mute button at the bottom features an LED indicator to let you know at a glance if your microphone is active.
While you can bypass the DAC/Amp module and plug the 3.5mm jack directly into your device, the headset's built-in cable is quite short. It is clearly designed to be used in tandem with the module, which provides the necessary length for a desktop setup. Without it, the short cable limits you to handheld devices like smartphones or console controllers.
Lastly, the FiiO FG3 includes a highly flexible and fully removable boom microphone. This modular design is excellent for distraction-free gaming, allowing you to easily detach the mic and keep it out of your peripheral vision when not in use.
