Akasa release two new fans to their lineup - Pearl White and Smart Fan
Posted by: Andrew Wallace on: 2008-11-20 07:10:41 0 comments

The Pearl white that comes in two flavours – 80mm and 120mm. The Pearl white is an LED fan which illuminates a bright white light. If this fan can compete with the leaders in this field by offering great performance and low noise levels this is likely to be a winner as the white illumination is a welcome change over the typical blue lighting used in most LED fans. An extract from the akasa website says:
An ultra quiet 12cm case fan delivering high air volumes with an incredible acoustic performance of only 17.5dB(A). The Pearl White effect is achieved by using bright gloss white blades, which reflect light from the four bright white LED’s. Crystal clear frame allows the light to spread providing system illumination. The fantastic pearl white glow adds subtle style to any PC system.
The Smart fan comes in 3 flavours – 80mm, 90mm and 120mm and similarly seeks to offer low noise and high performance using the PWM feature. A extract from the akasa website says:
Akasa Smart fans provide an ideal solution for combining ultra quiet and performance computing. Crystal clear fan frame and distinctive emperor blue blades provides precise controlled cooling by utilizing the motherboard PWM feature.
PWM is more accurate, energy saving and fully automatic way of controlling the fan speed (RPM). (compared to voltage regulation) PWM is widely available on all current Intel and AMD platform based motherboards and it enables ultra quiet acoustics during normal PC use and high performance cooling under high system load.
Smart fans can be used on a CPU cooler as well as a chassis or radiator fans. Combined with optional AK-CB002 cable adapter (connects three fans to PWM connector) is an ideal solution for building performance and ultra quiet systems, with all fans running at controlled speeds regulated by system load and CPU temperature. Siliconized rubber fan mounts are provided for easy mounting and ultra quiet acoustics.

Google Inc. has opened an online photo gallery that will feature millions of images from Life magazine’s archives that have never been seen by the public before.
The new service, available at images.google.com/hosted/life, debuted Tuesday with about 2 million photos. Eventually, Google plans to scan all 10 million photos from Life’s library so they can be viewed on any computer with an Internet connection. About 97 percent of Life’s archives have not been publicly seen, according to Life.
The photos can be printed out for free as long as they aren’t being used as part of an attempt to make money. Time Warner Inc., Life’s parent company, hopes to make money by selling high-resolution, framed prints. The orders will be processed through Qoop.com. Life’s archives include photos from the Civil War as well as some of the most memorable moments from the 20th century, including the Zapruder film capturing John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

Akasa provide effective cooling for i7
Posted by: Andrew Wallace on: 2008-11-18 09:31:59 0 comments

Akasa has unveiled their latest cooling solution for the new i7 platform. Nero The Cooling Emperor takes the classic Nero design ‘combining peak performance and near silent operation’.
A multi-platform cooler designed for the entire range of Intel and AMD current processors. 3 x 8mm ultra high capacity U heatpipes are installed with direct CPU contact for rapid heat transfer. Direct contact eliminates a thermal resistance thereby increasing efficiency. 46 high grade aluminium profiled fins ensure optimum heat dissipation. A piano black 120mm PWM fan is mounted using anti-vibration siliconized rubber pins giving whisper quiet cooling.
The product design has been refined to ensure ultra quiet and exceptional cooling for CPU’s up to 150W TDP (Thermal Design Power). Installation is easy using push-pins (Intel) or cam-lever (AMD) mounting mechanism.
Akasa NERO can be assembled horizontally or vertically (in desktop or tower chassis) as the heatpipes work independently of installation direction.

NVidia prepare for Big Bang II – OpenGL 3.0 and SLI Multi Monitor Support
Posted by: Andrew Wallace on: 2008-08-05 05:38:42 0 comments

NVidia are planning to launch a major drive release they are code naming “Big Bang II” (Release 180 or R180). Amongst other improvements OpenGL 3.0 and multi-monitor support is on the list.
The following information was obtained from Toms Hardware:
“Owners of SLI systems should now celebrate, since R180 finally brings end to second monitor going dark after a 3D game was loaded. Given the fact that we work in multi-monitor environment, and for years our multi-monitor configurations with ATI CrossFire and Nvidia SLI were a pain in the a**. All that we can say is this feature was long overdue.
The second "big one" improvement is introduction of OpenGL 3.0 API, after almost a year in delays. OpenGL 3.0 brings updated hardware support for new technologies such as geometry shaders, texture arrays and other features introduced with DirectX 10 hardware. From our side, it is sad to see how OpenGL ended up. From a leading 3D API to API that is almost two years lagging behind hardware - these features were introduced with first DX10 GPU in November 2006.”
