AMD Debuts The Ryzen 9 3900 With OEMs; 3500X Is China Exclusive

Two new members of AMD's 3rd Generation Ryzen family have gone on sale this week, but it transpires that Western DIY system enthusiasts will need to keep waiting to get their hands on new toys. The two CPUs will be making their way to OEMs, and in the lower end model will be launched into the Chinese market only.

The existence of AMD's Ryzen 9 3900 was leaked in September and was notable as a 65W TDP variant of the 12-core/24-thread 3900-series configuration. Lower base and boost clocks account for the lower TDP than the 105W 3900X, but in other aspects the CPU appears identical to its older sibling. The CPU will be available in pre-built systems globally, likely forming the back-bone of high performance OEM workhorse designs going into the Holiday season that don't suffer from the stocking issues of the top-end 3900X.

Ryzen 9 3900 Technical Specifications

Manufacturing Node: TSMC 7nm FinFET

# of CPU Cores: 12
# of Threads: 24
Base Clock: 3.1GHz
Max Boost Clock: Up to 4.3GHz

Total L1 Cache: 768KB
Total L2 Cache: 6MB
Total L3 Cache: 64MB

PCI Express® Version: PCIe 4.0 x16

Default TDP / TDP: 65W
Max Temps: 95C

Meanwhile, the Chinese OEM and SI market is receiving their own exclusive CPU. The Ryzen 5 3500X is a significant departure from prior Ryzen models in that it doesn't support Simultaneous Multithreading, making it a 6-core model that only supports up to six independent threads. AMD's other 6-core models - the 3600 and 3600X - are both 6-core/12-thread CPUs.

The CPUs operating frequencies are a competitive 3.6GHz Base/ 4.1GHz Boost, and the cache configuration appears to be the same as the Ryzen 5 3600 designs. It also sits with a 65W TDP, so OEMs can configure systems without the need for performance oriented cooling solutions.

Expect systems with the new systems to pop up in the very near future at OEMs and SIs, but we wouldn't count on getting your hands on them as standalone products.
