AMD has released a roadmap that shows them phasing out creating of CPU's and focusing on their future in making APUs. This should come as no surprise as the next gen consoles have AMD APUs in them and this is seeing the company become profitable again. The FX-9590 and the FX-9370 will be the last AMD CPUs.
An APU (Accelerated/Advanced Processing Unit) is essentially a processor that includes additional capabilities to accelerate other processing hardware outside of the main CPU. This may be, in the case of the next gen consoles, a GPU. This could have many advantages including smaller and more powerful hardware, less components and possibly even creating a standard across PC based hardware.
What the roadmap shows is that the Vishera line of CPU will stay in AMD's product range until at least 2015 and that the new Kaveri APU will be available in 2014. The Carizzo APU which is utilises the Excavator CPU architecture will be introduced in 2015, possibly at the time the Vishera CPU line is no longer in production.
It will be interesting to see how these APUs perform and we are awaiting the release of the first benchmarks.
