Chuwi Accused of Deceptive CPU Switch: CoreBook X Ryzen 5 Ships with Ryzen 5 5500U Instead of Advertised 7430U

Chuwi is facing criticism after reports revealed that its CoreBook X laptop may not contain the processor listed in its official specifications. The model has been marketed with an AMD Ryzen 5 7430U processor, but investigators discovered that some units appear to ship with an older Ryzen 5 5500U instead. The discrepancy was first noticed by users posting on reddit and a few reviewers who found inconsistencies in system information and benchmark results. This prompted a closer inspection of the hardware.

Processor inspection reveals different OPN
During the investigation, a reviewer partially disassembled the laptop and briefly inspected the processor itself. The chip markings revealed the CPU OPN number 100-000000375, which corresponds to the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U rather than the advertised Ryzen 5 7430U.

This physical identification confirmed that the processor installed in the laptop differed from the specifications listed by the manufacturer.

Firmware reportedly masks the processor
Investigators also reported that the laptop’s BIOS and system monitoring tools still identify the processor as a Ryzen 5 7430U. This has led to speculation that the firmware may have been modified to mask the actual CPU model.

While both processors feature six cores and twelve threads, the Ryzen 5 7430U is based on a newer Zen 3 architecture with a larger 16MB L3 cache, compared to the older Ryzen 5 5500U which carries 8MB of L3 cache.

Concerns over misleading specifications
The discovery has raised concerns about transparency in product specifications. Although component substitutions can occur due to supply issues, manufacturers typically disclose such changes to customers.

At the time of writing, Chuwi has not provided a detailed explanation for the discrepancy. Pricing and availability of the CoreBook X remain unchanged despite the controversy.
