Intel celebrates its 40th anniversary of the first 8086 processor and launches the limited edition 8th generation Intel Core i7-8086K processor, the first Intel processor to deliver up to 5.0 GHz single-core turbo frequency. World-renowned overclocker der8auer takes a look at the Intel Core i7-8086K processor, delids it and pushed it to the higher possible frequency.
Der8auer uses the ASUS ROG Maximum X APEX motherboard for the Intel Core i7-8086K processor. The sample i7-8086K was also delidded to check its thermal interface material which was found out to be the same with the regular i7-8700K processors. Using liquid nitrogen for extreme cooling, the i7-8086K was cooled at -185°Celcius. After just thirty minutes of pushing the voltage higher, the sample i7-8086K was able to reach 7244MHz, just a few MHz shy from the overclocker’s highest OC with an i7-8700K which reached 7300MHz.
“Overall, I would say that the 8086K is basically just a good, pre-tested 8700K.” – der8auer
The overclocker explains that the limited edition Intel Core i7-8086K is also the Intel Core i7-8700K, these are just cherry-picked binned processors that guarantee higher frequencies of up to 5.0GHz like what Intel claims. There’s no pricing information for the limited edition Intel Core i7-8086K processor as of this writing.
