The near-legendary DOOM franchise makes a welcome return next week after a twelve year hiatus, and to mark the occasion id Software have released the final in-engine trailer which teases the game's single-player component:

Alongside the trailer a set of minimum and recommended PC system specifications have been released which may pose a challenge for older rigs.

Minimum:

- OS: Windows 7/8.1/10 (64-bit versions).
- CPU: Intel Core i5-2400/AMD FX-8320 or better.
- System Memory: 8 GB RAM.
- GPU: Nvidia GTX 670 2GB/AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB or better.
- 55 GB free HDD space.
- Contains a single disc. Download of additional files from Steam (total amount 45 GB) is required to run the game.
- Requires Steam activation and broadband internet connection for multiplayer and SnapMap.

Recommended:

- OS: Windows 7/8.1/10 (64-bit versions).
- CPU: Intel Core i7-3770/AMD FX-8350 or better.
- System Memory: 8GB;
- GPU: Nvidia GTX 970 4GB/AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB or better.
- 55 GB free HDD space.
- Contains a single disc. Download of additional files from Steam (total amount 45 GB) is required to run the game.
- Requires Steam activation and broadband internet connection for Multiplayer and SnapMap.

Those are some pretty high minimum requirements. Particularly noteworthy is the stipulation of at minimum a quad-core CPU, excluding swathes of budget models from both Intel and AMD as well as many laptops. NVIDIA and AMD's mid-range GPUs from the previous generations - the GTX 660 and HD 7850 respectively - will also apparently not have the grunt to run the game at a feasible minimum frame rate. Echoes there of Doom 3, which itself was particularly taxing on mainstream hardware of the day.

By contrast the recommended specifications are broadly in line with current industry trends: an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290. Both are their manufacturers respective 'bang for you buck' kings, and if there are any next-gen GPU announcements this week expect these models to suddenly become a lot more attractive in price.

Requiring 55GB free HDD space shouldn't be a problem for anyone who runs games from a mechanical HDD, however you may need to clear some room if your Steam Library currently resides on an SSD.

DOOM 3 is being released on PC, XBOX One and PS4. The game is set for it PC release on May 13th at the following times:

- Australia/New Zealand @ 12 AM AEST
- North America @ 12 AM ET
- Europe @ 12 AM GMT +1
