Oh Google you zany bunch of crazy people. Imagine bringing virtual reality to your smartphone with some cardboard. However, there is method to the madness.
Cardboard is a simple DIY enclosure that transforms a phone into a basic virtual reality headset and the accompanying open software toolkit. Cardboard makes it easy for both users and developers to experiment with VR. In this session we discuss how to build immersive 3D experiences for Android. We give a deep dive into 3D side-by-side rendering, head tracking, and user interaction principles. We introduce a new open source VR toolkit and walk through using it to create a sample immersive app.
We want everyone to experience virtual reality in a simple, fun, and inexpensive way. That's the goal of the Cardboard project.

Google have provided you with everything you need (except raw materials) to go out and make your own ghetto Virtual Reality viewer. They are also releasing an open software toolkit to encourage developers to go crazy and make apps for this and make them available to everyone.
Do you have the skills and are interested in making one of these? Check out the source for all the information you need. We'd love to see what our subscribers can come up with.
