Irrational Games have just announced the release date of the eagerly anticipated next chapter in the BioShock franchise. Speaking on the official blog, ig.rantana stated:
Irrational Games is proud to announce that BioShock Infinite will be released on October 16, 2012!
“After BioShock, we had a vision for a follow up that dwarfed the original in scope and ambition,” said Ken Levine. “BioShock Infinite has been our sole focus for the last four years, and we can’t wait for fans to get their hands on it.”
BioShock Infinite will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC with an international release of October 19, 2012.

The game is set in an alternate 1912 on the floating city of Columbia. You play Booker DeWitt, a former Pinkerton agent sent to Columbia to rescue Elizabeth, who has been imprisoned there from childhood. Together you will battle to escape from a city in decline, both figuratively and literally.
October is a long time yet, but even this far out it's easy to believe that BioShock Infinite will be one of the biggest game launches of the year.
