Razer's Game Store To Shut Their Doors After Less Than A Year

In April last year Razer announced their game store, to much fanfare. Building on the success of their hardware/peripheral store and dominating brand presence, the diversification into selling games - both exclusives and keys activated on major platforms such as UPlay and Steam - seemed like a natural progression. Razer Gold and Silver currencies acted as loyalty incentives, not locking gamers into the store so much as offering just a little more bang for their buck. Sadly, it appears that the game store no longer figures in Razer's long-term plans, leading to its closure on February 28th.

Dear Gamers,

We regret to announce that Razer Game Store (gamestore.razer.com) will cease operations on February 28, 2019 at 0100hrs Pacific Time as part of the company’s realignment plans.

It has been a privilege for us to recommend and deliver great digital game deals to you. We have been extremely fortunate to have you as part of our awesome community. Thank you for the support and making all this possible.

We will be investing in other ways to deliver great content and introduce game promotions through Razer Gold, our virtual credits system (https://gold.razer.com/). Do visit us there and stay tuned for more news.

Yours truly,
The Razer Game Store team

The writing was arguably on the wall as soon as Epic Games began to aggressively expand their digital distribution platform. Securing their own exclusives would become more difficult, and margins tighter. With a stranglehold to maintain on peripheral hardware mindshare, diverting their attention away from the core business was always going to be a risky move. A move that, it appears, hasn't paid off.

Accounts with Razer Gold should still be able to spend accumulated credits with partner services for the time being, but realistically now might be a good time to clear out any left-over balance and associated game vouchers.
