One hallmark of Milton-Keynes based Network Addressed Storage experts Synology UK is the frequent pace of updates to their hardware lineup, ensuring it both stays ahead of consumer trends and keeps pace with their own DSM software improvements. This week they're launching their new single-bay and quad-bay NAS solutions, targeting SOHO and high productivity environments in need of powerful and flexible external storage.

DiskStation DS116

First up is the single-bay Diskstation DS116, priced at £127.70 inc. VAT. Sold primarily as an option for home use and workgroup environments, the NAS effectively replaces 2015's DS115 and is equipped out-the-box with Synology's DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system.

The DS116 is powered by an ARMADA 385 88F6820 dual-core CPU clocked at 1.8GHz, and features 1GB DDR3 RAM. The inclusion of a LAN port makes the NAS ideal for sharing data amongst multiple users, and two USB 3.0 ports provide additional support for auxiliary high-speed storage or additional devices.

Compared to its predecessor however, the DS116 really wins with exceptional encrypted read/writes. The new hardware encryption engine boosts read rates by 241% and write rates by an eye-opening 364%, ensuring that the presence of critical data that must be held securely doesn't bog down overall performance and productivity.

DS116 Features

· It is equipped with ARMADA 385 88F6820 Dual Core 1.8GHz CPU and 1GB DDR3 memory.

· Provides an outstanding read/write performance of 112.67 MB/s in reading and over 111.82 MB/s in writing.

· Equipped with hardware encryption engine, the performance of encrypted data transmission can reach to 112.97 MB/s in reading and 93.73 MB/s in writing.

· Dual USB 3.0 ports are supported on the rear panel, providing high speed transmission to external USB devices.

· DS116 is an ideal model for small business workgroups to easily sync and share data and boost productivity through Synology’s comprehensive collaboration tools.

· DS116 is backed with Synology's 2-year limited warranty.

DiskStation DS916+

The second of the new DiskStation devices is the DS916+, an effective replacement for the quad-bay DS415+. As a 4-bay solution with optional expansion possibilities, the DS916+ is intended to bridge the gap between personal/SOHO storage requirements and more comprehensive (and hence relatively costly) enterprise designs. The DS916+ comes in two models: a 2GB RAM version priced at £442.80 inc. V.A.T., and an 8GB version with an MSRP of £480.00 inc. V.A.T.; both are covered by Synology's 3-year limited warranty.

In its default configuration the DS916+ can operate as a standard 4-bay NAS, much like the DS415+. It's equipped with DSM 6.0, Synology's latest NAS operating system, which features both usability optimisations and on-board apps designed to add additional capabilities to the system. As a result the DS916+ offers more advanced transcoding options than previous models such as real-time H.264 single-channel 4K Ultra HD or triple-channel Full HD video transcoding.

When paired with the DX513 however the DS916+ storage capabilities can be expanded to up to nine drives, making it adaptable to a businesses evolving storage needs.

Like the more mainstream DS116, the DS916+ integrates a hardware encryption engine that ensures high throughput for encrypted data. This feature can also work in tandem with Link Aggregation, boosting encrypted data transmission to over 225MB/s read and 209MB/s write.

DS916+ Features

· It features an Intel Pentium N3710 quad-core processor with AES-NI hardware encryption engine,

· 2GB or 8GB memory options, Btrfs / Snapshot Replication and the scalability of up to 9 drives with DX513.

· With Link Aggregation enabled, DS916+ delivers up to an average 225.91 MB/s reading and 221.04 MB/s writing speed, and an encrypted data transmission at over 225.83 MB/s reading and 209.35 MB/s writing.

· DS916+ also features real-time H.264 single-channel 4K Ultra HD or triple-channel Full HD video transcoding, bringing more complete support to the latest multimedia file formats and contents.

· Synology DS916+ is backed with Synology’s 3-year limited warranty.

Both the DS116 and DS916+ are available worldwide with pricing varying by region. For more information on these and other high-quality NAS storage solutions visit Synology.com, and find them on twitter [url=http://www.twitter.com/synologyuk]@SynologyUK[url].
