As one of the top games of 2014 Wolfenstein: The New Order was always going to be ripe for a follow-up. Finally that followup is here in the form of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, a standalone expansion framed as a prequel to The New Order once again starring B.J. Blazkowicz.
The Old Blood is set up as the spiritual heir to the traditional Wolfenstein formula, swapping the high-tech Nazi war machine seen in The New Order for a fusion of technology and the occult which has been a fixture since the 1981 original. From uncovering the location to a secret Nazi archaeological site, through to being pitted against the Paranormal Division, the themes should be familiar to anyone with the background to the series.
Developer Machine Games have tweaked both assets and game engine to better optimise the title for the latest generation of consoles and PC GPUs. However, much like Activision's Far Cry Blood Dragon, they've gone for a tighter package and commensurately reduced MSRP.
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is available from Steam, priced at £14.99. Those who haven't played The New Order can also take advantage of a £29.99 bundle which includes both titles, but the 2014 title isn't required to play this expansion.
