This is the first of what can be regarded as a ‘real world’ test. A simple 2.5 GB file transfer from one machine to another, using each adapter. Each run was repeated 3 times and averaged.
A win for the onboard network chip
The onboard performs slightly better here, which may be expected due to its TCP optimisation, but the times are actually quite similar. This is because the major bottleneck of performance was not the gigabit network, but in fact the write speed of the hard disk drive in the machine being transferred to. So, in the real world, it’s of little consequence which network adapter you use.
