Power Consumption

Fermi gained much notoriety upon release for its power consumption. The GTX465, being based on the same GF100, albeit cut down, can be expected to suffer from the same issue despite Nvidia trying their best to alleviate the problem with fewer shaders. Testing the card under full load using MSI Kombustor for 5 minutes tells us that the GTX465 consumes up to 10% more power than the HD5850. The high consumption when overclocked is partially due to the increase in voltage accompanying the 30% increase in core clock speed. In that regard, efficiency favours the ATI cards, but the GTX465 isn't terribly worse.

Unfortunately, we didn't have a reference card at hand to verify whether the superior components of the MSI card yielded better power consumption results
