Nexus Silent Mouse SM-9000 Review

Conclusion

I'm really very impressed with the Nexus SM-9000. Great ergonomics despite the compact size and it's certainly easy on the eye too. It would happily grace any laptop bag and certainly the occasional desktop setup too.

Raw tracking performance is also right up there with a smooth and reliable response that gives a great amount of confidence to even highly accurate and detailed usage. Work based application is one thing but these days gaming performance is also an important factor - users want to know they're getting something flexible enough to deliver on both. Once again as you saw from the testing I found the SM-9000 a credible unit. It's smoothness and accuracy certainly benefitted me in both COD4 and Far Cry 2... again only the Nexus' small physical size was a slight issue. Although it would be fine for users with either a fingertip style or smaller hands.

The only issue I could identify besides the understandably compact dimensions was the lack of forward and back buttons. It's not a massively huge issue - more an annoyance that could have been avoided by their inclusion. During the initial day or so of testing I did find myself going for the buttons only to find them absent however after a week of use I decided I could work without them.

The exceptional Nexus SM-9000.

Now onto the shining light that is those silent switches. I honestly thought I'd either not get on with them and/or they would simply be a gimmick that made no discernable difference.

I could not have been more wrong...

It really has been a revelation. The reduction in stress caused by something as simple as a click has been a boon. I initially thought I'd be going back to my standard Microsoft work mouse (especially after going for the forward and back buttons for the first time) but found the mouse so relaxing that despite that issue I continued using it. It's been an absolute pleasure and I am genuinely astonished at the difference it's made to my working day. The switches still give the tactile sensation of a click so you know for sure when you've clicked on something... you just don't hear a sound. Marvellous!!!

Despite the lack of forward and back browser buttons and as a result of the smooth and accurate tracking performance, great looks and simply awesome silent switched buttons the Nexus SM-9000 is deserving of our Gold award - well done!
